Firelands Red Cross aids storm victims

Melissa Topey • Oct 31, 2012 at 2:38 PM

Ron Rude, executive director of the Firelands chapter of the American Red Cross, said his agency has helped five local families afflicted by storm damage late Monday and early Tuesday.

“These were cases where damage to homes was too severe to live in the home,” Rude said.

Two families in Norwalk, two families in Sandusky and one in Vermilion were placed into shelters or hotels.

The Firelands Red Cross also sent one of its own workers, Eileen Guy, to help out in New Jersey, which was pummeled by the hurricane. Guy is working with a Red Cross public relations team there.

The Ottawa County Red Cross chapter also sent Larry Coats, a seasoned disaster volunteer, to the East Coast, director Beth Leggett said.

Coats was equipped with an emergency response vehicle.
