Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers investigating the crash said Robin Reaves, 40, of Tiffin, was driving north on Ohio 4 in her 2002 Subaru Outback when a 1999 Ford Explorer driven by John Klish, 88, of Mansfield, ran a stop sign on Strecker Road and drove into the path of the Subaru.
The crash caused both cars to spin into a field in the northwest corner of the intersection. Reaves was alert after the crash, but was taken by medical helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo for her injuries. Klish was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the collision, several people called 911, and a truck driver who witnessed the crash grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out flames that sprang from Reaves' Subaru before emergency responders arrived.
"That's why everyone should carry fire extinguishers in their vehicle," Groton Township fire Chief Kerry Jett said. "You never know when you made need it to help yourself of someone else."
