There have been a few unforeseen turns in the road for Ann Van Nort, a former Sandusky junior high teacher who retired in 2008.

She became a triathlete, overcame breast cancer and is helping raise her young granddaughter. But she now faces her toughest challenge yet.

On May 6, Van Nort, 60, fell down her basement stairs breaking a vertebrae, ocular bone, sternum, three ribs and her left wrist. Among other injuries, she now has no feeling and is paralyzed below her chest.

“She is one tough woman, if there is anyone that will keep a positive outlook, it is her,” said her former principal Scott Matheny.

Read more about how Van Nort is doing with her recovery in Wednesday's Register.
