More than 75 people braved marathon rides on Cedar Point's Magnum XL-200 and Gemini this week — all in the name of raising money for Give Kids the World Village.
Cedar Point and 10 other Cedar Fair parks across the country hosted the fourth annual event raising nearly $114,000 for the children's charity based in Kissimmee, Fla.
What makes this year different than the previous three? More money was raised in 2012 year than in the first three years combined.
“We are thrilled,” said Annie Zelm, a spokeswoman for Cedar Point said. “The event has grown every year and continues to grow as more people find out about this.”
Each of 350 participants across the country raised a minimum $75 for Give Kids the World to earn a spot on a coaster.
After signing up, these individuals collected donations online and recruited others to follow suit. Participants continued to collect donations at the park, where the top three fundraisers were rewarded prizes by Cedar Fair and Give Kids the World after their roller coaster extravaganza.
Aside from enjoying all of the rides at the park, riders had the option to continuously ride the Magnum XL-200 for a two hour period, and the Gemini for a three hour period with no waits, a perk offered by the park only during the charity event.
Give Kids the World accommodates children with life threatening illnesses and their families at a 70-acre resort in Central Florida for a week free of charge. Their time at the resort is inspired by a favorite fairy tale, in hopes of easing the pressure that comes with adversity caused by troublesome health issues.
This year's top fundraiser, Kyle Miller of Hanover, Md., raised more than $3,500, and was rewarded a family four pack to Cedar Point and a VIP tour. Jason Hammond, the Greater Ohio Coaster Club membership director, secured second place by contributing nearly $3,000 in donations, and was given a family four pack to Cedar Point’s highly popular HalloWeekends attraction. Jeffrey Brashares, of Delaware, Ohio, earned a third-place slot with a contribution of nearly $2,200 and won a dufflebag loaded with gifts from Give Kids the World.
