Fisher-Titus Medical Center employees and Norwalk police collected almost 150 pounds of unused and expired medication during the Prescription Drug Take Back event on Saturday.

The event happened in conjunction with a national day of awareness to prescription drug addiction and prevention. Residents were encouraged to clear their cabinets of expired or unused prescription drugs and and take them to one of several drop-off sites around the area, including the one at Fisher-Titus.

The program, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, helps prevent pill abuse and thefts by removing potentially dangerous drugs from households.

Drop-offs at Fisher-Titus on Saturday totaled 146.6 pounds of unused or expired medication.
