People may find a little piece of local history jangling around in their pockets in a few years.

The U.S. Mint announced it will feature Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial on a quarter to be issued in 2013.

The quarter is one of 56 America the Beautiful quarters that honor the country's most treasured places.

"This was a big surprise for us and a big honor," said memorial superintendent Blanca Alvarez Stransky.

She said many people don't know the historical significance of Perry's Victory, and the quarters might help spread the word.

"It's cool to know we'll be carried around in people's pockets," she said.

Other quarters in the series include Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Yosemite National Park in 2010, Gettysburg National Military Park, Glacier National Park and Olympic National Park in 2011, and Hawaii Volcanos National Park in 2013 among others.

New America the Beautiful quarters will be issued each year until 2021.

"Since our nation's founding, our coins have celebrated American ideals such as liberty and justice, our rich history and heritage, and the great presidents and other leaders who have guided us," said U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar in a statement.

"I am pleased that these new quarters will now celebrate America the Beautiful, the spectacular natural wonders that are found in our national parks, wildlife refuges and public lands."

Stransky said the 2013 release date for the Perry's Victory quarter coincides with the War of 1812's bicentennial.

She said staff at the memorial are already working on plans to remember the battle on Lake Erie, and honor the lasting peace between Canada and the U.S.
