On the job: Men of steel

Melissa Topey • Feb 13, 2012 at 9:08 AM

Sandusky Steel was formed in 1964 by the father and uncles of owner Steve Lichtcsien, but the family already had scrapping in its DNA.

Their great-grandfather in 1912 started Norwalk Waste Materials company, also known as Lichtcsien's.

"We buy, process it and then sell it to steel foundries," Lichtcsien said.

Employees sort metal. Industrial trucks motor in and out. Cars and pickup trucks bring in individual loads. Cranes pick up the scrap metal. And in the middle of this people walk around and dump metal on the pile.
