Jason's Mailbag: EHOVE teacher allegations

Jason Singer • Mar 28, 2011 at 4:12 PM

Q: Hi Jason, Is the Sheriff's Department still investigating the allegations against EHOVE teacher Ned McElfresh?  Haven’t heard or seen anything since the first report back in December 2010. — Becky from Norwalk

A: Thanks for the question, Becky. According to Erie County Sheriff’s Capt. Paul Sigsworth, investigators are still working the case against Ned McElfresh. But the McElfresh case obviously took a backseat to the Officer Dunn shooting last week, and it's not known when it will become a priority again.

The Erie County Sheriff’s office is spearheading both investigations.

For those of you who don’t remember, the Erie County Sheriff’s office opened an investigation into McElfresh in December for allegations that he'd had inappropriate relationships with female high school students.

McElfresh called in sick a day after investigators asked to see his personnel file.

He submitted his resignation the following work day.

McElfresh began working for EHOVE in 2004 as a paramedic instructor, before the program was combined with the firefighter program. He had previously worked for fire departments in Cleveland and Huron, before coming to EHOVE.

Last Sigsworth knew, sheriff’s detectives were still waiting on certain pieces of information from possible witnesses. I have left a message for Detective Jared Oliver — who’s working the case — to get more information. When I have it, I will update this answer.
