Boat Week set for September

Lake Erie Boat Week is another step closer to reality after the event organizer signed a contract with the city to lease property.

After being denied several extensions insurance, deposits and other issues, event organizer and creator Janie Vogel this week finalized plans and reached an agreement with the city.

The negotiations had been carrying on for several months.

Vogel “pulled off a Houdini act” in the last few weeks as she obtained her corporate status and fulfilled other requirements city officials required to host the event, Huron city manager Andy White said.

And while the city is still waiting for the final consent letter from Vogel’s insurance company, Huron assistant law director Laura Alkire is confident the letter will arrive before Tuesday’s deadline.

Next week, city council is scheduled to either approve or reject the contract with Vogel, the final logistical step to lock in Boat Week for Huron.

Officially registered under the trade name ProRace Marketing LLC, the event is scheduled for September 7-12 at the Huron Boat Basin.

ProRace Marketing LLC has also signed a contract with APR Events Group, producers of the APR Powerboat Superleague.

APR Powerboat Superleague is organizing a race that will be part of event. That race is slated to run on the Huron River on September 11-12, Vogel said in a press release.

Lake Erie Boat Week is expected to attract more than 100,000 people and inject a potential $5 million to $10 million to the local economy, Vogel said.

“I am happy to say that I’ve signed a contract with the city of Huron to produce Lake Erie Boat Week,” she stated. “Although I had no doubt that this day would come, it’s a great milestone to achieve and is certainly a testament to the hard work put into this event on everyone’s part.”

Vogel thanked a slew of Huron officials for their cooperation in her efforts.

Various promotional and advertising opportunities also remain for the inaugural Lake Erie Boat Week event, Vogel said. For more information, visit www.LakeErieBoatWeek.com or contact Vogel at 440-915-7627 or racingpr@oh.rr.com.
