LETTER: Give life, donate organs

Commentary • Apr 30, 2010 at 1:56 AM

Just over 10 years ago, I was given the unbelievable opportunity to extend my life. Two wonderfully generous families donated the organs of their loved one so I could survive.

Having been healthy all of my life and consciously making healthy decisions, being unexpectedly knocked flat with a sudden illness is scary at the least. I was given the very best care by Dr Tom Williamson & Dr Steve Diblasi, in Sandusky, while entrusting the transplant needs to the Cleveland Clinic, with the blessings of my cardiologist cousin in Kansas City. How very fortunate I have been to be treated by the absolutely best team of health care professionals in the world. These caring people had the tenacity to continue to hunt for another heart for me after the first one transplanted failed while I was on the operating table.

My neighbors, sons, and friends were kind to help out when needed, especially following my cancer surgery.

I hope to continue to be an asset to my communities and encourage all of you to sign up for organ and tissue donation. Eighteen people in the United States die each day while waiting for an organ transplant. There are more than 100,000 people currently waiting for an organ. Please be generous. One donor can enhance the lives of 50 other people. It is quite easy to do by visiting donatelifeneOhio.org. You may also designate your wishes on your driver's license, but be sure to tell your family and friends of your wishes.

Please donate blood too.
