Break out the tropical shirts and lawn chairs — it’s time for the Pantasia Steel Drum Band.
“(Pantasia) is one of the premiere concerts we have during the summer,” said Bill Werner, musical coordinator for the Sandusky Community Celebrations Council, the group that coordinates the event. “We get a real nice turnout of people.”
Pantasia, the award-winning group from Findlay High School, is making its yearly pilgrimage to the gazebo as part of the Washington Park Gazebo Concert Series at 7 p.m. July 28. The ensemble, which has performed in such venues as New Orleans, the Bahamas and New York City’s Lincoln Center, averages about 40 performances a year.
“They like the venue here in town,” Werner said. “And people enjoy the beauty of downtown Sandusky.”
And because so many people enjoy the gazebo series — particularly this show — many head to the park about an hour ahead of time to set up folding chairs or blankets to claim their spots, Werner said.
But what can you do with that hour before the concert? Werner said many people grab a snack from the Popcorn Wagon or Hot Dog Dave’s cart, both of which will be open before and during the concert. In addition, folks from First Presbyterian Church-the group that sponsors the series-will sell raffle tickets at the event.
No matter if you come early or just in time, Pantasia is bound to be a crowd-pleaser.
“A lot of people look forward to Thursday evenings,” Werner said.
