Giving the community and students something to sing about is what Terra State Community College Director of Choral Activities Michael Shirtz has in store with “An Evening at the Pops!” show April 29 at the Port Clinton Performing Arts Center in Port Clinton.
“I’d say this is for anybody who is interested in show tunes or Broadway or loves music that was used in movies,” Shirtz said. “It’s something that’s for the whole family, and reaches out to a huge spectrum of people. Also, we want to give our students a whole series of things, so this is our pops concert, which will focus on music from stage and screen.”
He added, “It’s not the most challenging music we’ve done, compared to what we did earlier this semester, but that’s one of the reasons we do it. So our students can come in and perform music they know and love. Sometimes it’s fun to sing music that is your favorite.”
The 90-minute program includes the musical themes of MGM, the works of Stephen Sondheim, Disney favorites and musicals (“Chicago,” “West Side Story” and more). There will also be highlights from the “Harry Potter” films, as well as the “We Were Soldiers” song “Mansion of the Lord.”
Something else special about “An Evening at the Pops!” is its inclusion of local artists and musicians. The list includes Port Clinton tuba player Rodney Miller (Port Clinton High School band director), Oak Harbor singer John Boaz, Sandusky singer Pamela Shirtz and Milan singer Kristen Fahning.
“We think it’s important to highlight our local artists and people who are in music,” Shirtz said. “We chose performers who have actually inspired our students to go in and study careers in music. The people I chose were four that our students said they looked up to. We thought it would be nice to honor them by inviting them to perform since they inspired our students to come to the college to begin with.”
When asked what he enjoys most about the “Evening at the Pops!” concerts, Shirtz said it’s taking people on a walk down memory lane.
“I’m looking forward to just presenting this stuff because you see so many people say after the concert, ‘I remember that song or I remember the first time I went to see that in New York,’” Shirtz said. “This concert brings back so many memories. That’s what I love the most about these types of programs.”
