Rick Souter knocks off defending Mills champ Joel Foss

There will not be a repeat champion in the annual Mills Creek Championship golf tournament.

The last occasion someone earned a repeat title was Gary Schaefer, who turned the trick in 1996, the last of his 13 crowns on the nine-hole municipal course.

Rick Souter took care of that Saturday in the quarterfinal round with a 2&1 win over 2010 king Joel Foss.

The other winners to form the semifinal pairings were 2009 champion Tim Belden (Port Clinton), Andrew Bolinger (Castalia) and Shawn Bahnsen (Sandusky).

It will be Souter-Belden and Bolinger-Bahnsen in the 8 a.m. pairing for the scheduled 18-hole match.

Belden, the 2009 champion who fell to Foss in the 2010 title match, advanced with a 3&2 victory over Derek Kuns (Castalia). Bolinger defeated Ed Verlie (Huron), 4&2 while Bahnsen had the most impressive performance of the day in a 6&5 nod over close friend Tim Zapadka.
