Jones, Margaretta back to winning ways

What once was lost has been found in Castalia.

Hope was high for the Margaretta Polar Bears after a 3-1 start this season. They followed it with a three-game skid, however, until the running of quarterback Devin Jones and Corey Yontz put the Bears back on track in a big way for a 44-22 win over Edison Friday night at Margaretta High School.

The win improved Margaretta to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Meanwhile, the Chargers had entered the game ninth in Division IV Region 14, but are likely out of playoff contention after falling to 4-4 (1-4 SBC).

"Things had been getting tough around here," Margaretta coach Rock Farlow said. "It was good to see the kids come out and just play hard, especially after last week when we gave up 21 points on special teams (in a 50-34 loss to Port Clinton). We had lost what we had built those first few weeks, but hopefully we found it tonight."

Jones found it early and often for the Polar Bears, scoring on a 22-yard touchdown run to open the game while adding scoring runs of 15 and 61. He finished with 189 yards rushing on 12 attempts and also completed 3-of-6 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Jones also had a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown called back as the first half expired on a personal foul on a Margaretta player at midfield.

"What can you say about Devin?" Farlow said. "We always try to get him in open space, and when he does, he is just unbelievable. And Corey Yontz too. He was just fighting and fighting for yards. I don't know how he got out of some of those tackles, but he did."

Yontz finished with 131 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts. Margaretta as a team ran for 414 yards on 49 attempts.

"It's hard to replicate Jones quickness and elusiveness in practice, and we knew we had to shut him down," Edison coach Jim Hall said. "It took a while for our guys to adjust to it, and by the time they did he was making plays and we couldn't contain him.

"It was just one of those things where their top athlete was making plays and we couldn't stay on our feet and do what we had to do to contain him."

Jones 22-yard touchdown run came at the 9:01 mark of the opening quarter to cap a 7-play, 81-yard scoring drive. He ran in the conversion attempt for a 8-0 lead.

Edison came back later in the first quarter as Kyle Matula rumbled through the Margaretta defense and cut up the right sideline for a 43-yard touchdown run with 3:14 left in the quarter. Jon Suhanic's kick made it an 8-7 game.

Jones answered with a 15-yard touchdown run to cap a 11-play, 78-yard scoring drive that took 4:53 off the clock. The senior threw to Yontz on the conversion pass for a 16-7 lead.

Yontz then got in on the scoring spree as he rumbled over two defenders before getting into the open field for a 50-yard touchdown run with 7:14 left in the half. He then ran in the conversion to make it 24-7, and the Bears never led by less than double digits the rest of the way.

Edison quarterback Brandon Tomson found a seam off an option read and cut into the open field for a 54-yard touchdown run to put the Chargers back into it at 24-14 with 6:24 left in the half.

The final blow for the Chargers came with 1:12 left in the half as Jones found Chris VanScoy in the flat on a screen pass. VanScoy got a key block at the point of the catch and found a hole in the Charger defense. The end result was a 74-yard touchdown pass and catch that made it 32-14 heading into halftime.

After an Edison punt in the third quarter, Jones got around the left side of the Edison defense and sprinted up the sideline for a 61-yard score with 7:56 left in the quarter. VanScoy closed the Bears scoring with a 1-yard run wwith 10:13 left.

Edison closed out the scoring on a 26-yard run by Zach Rutheford with 5:25 left. He led Edison with 108 yards on seven attempts while Tomson added 86 on six attempts and Matula had 78 on seven attempts.

Edison hosts St. Mary Central Catholic next week while Margaretta travels to Huron.
