NEW LONDON — New London got on the scoreboard first Friday against Mapleton and never looked back in a 33-14 Firelands Conference football win.
The Wildcats won their first game of the 2010 season. They are 1-6, 1-3.
A 16-yard touchdown connection between Clayton Hall and Clayton LaFleur gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 3:10 remaining in the first quarter.
The lead expanded to 14-0 in the second when Robert DePotty pounced on a blocked punt in the end zone.
Mapleton cut into the lead with a 13-yard passing touchdown from Brett Naymik to Shane Sanders.
New London’s Dane Held hauled in a 59-yard touchdown pass from Hall with 2:24 left in the first half, giving New London a 20-6 halftime lead.
The Wildcats posted the game’s lone touchdown in the third quarter.
Clay Wilson ran in from 8 yards out to make it 27-6. He added a 2-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.
Skylar Haines concluded the scoring on a 8-yard reception from Naymik. The two-point conversion made it 33-14.
Hall led New London with 60 yards rushing and went 4-of-7 for 125 in passing. LaFleur caught three passes for 66 yards.
New London is scheduled to play Oct. 16 against St. Paul at Whitney Field.
