Between the Lines with Stein Hospice

Jason Werling • Aug 22, 2014 at 11:06 PM

Amy Skolnik, Tamara Zuilhof and Angie Esposito from Stein Hospice were guests Friday on Between the Lines.

They talked about upcoming programs for the organization including Saturday's Pet Expo at the Sandusky Bay Pavilion. "Families can come out and bring not just their dogs, but other pets as well," said Esposito. Erie County dog warden Barb Knapp will be part of the event.

Another event sponsored by Stein Hospice will be the Stein Hospice Charity Golf Classic at Eagle Creek Golf Course on Wednesday, August 27, in Norwalk. It is the 20th year for the event. Surprises are planned for the anniversary, but Skolnik wouldn't give any hints to what those surprises would be.

Tamara Zuilhof, chief operating officer of Stein Hospice, talked about the beginnings of the organization when it started by a nun in the basement of what used to be Providence Hospital, now the South Campus of Firelands Regional Medical Center. Local philanthropist Sam Stein provided funding and encouraged the five local hospitals at the time to create an endowment fund for the organizition that now serves seven counties.

The women also talked about the ALS ice bucket challenge that has swept the nation. Esposito recently challenged Skolnik, her boss, to the challenge.  "I hear people say 'stop dumping water on your head and donate,'" said Esposito. "With any cause that you take up, it's important to bring awareness to what's going on," she continued. "The more people know, the less scary those diseases become, I say keep dumping ice on your head," Esposito said.
