Brad Miller is a Perkins Township native who lives in Kiev, Ukraine.
The Russian separatists who allegedly shot down a Malaysian Airlines earlier this month probably thought they were downing a military plane, says Miller.
The tragic event was "a really bad mistake on their part," said Miller, 37, who works for a U.S. State Department contractor, American Councils, that sends foreign exchange students to the United States.
Miller speaks Ukrainian and served in the Peace Corps in the Ukraine from 2001 to 2003. He returned in 2006 for his American Councils job, working to send Ukrainian teenagers to American host families.
