The second annual Chris Smith Memorial scramble is set for Aug. 2 at Woussickett with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Proceeds are put in place as a way to acquire funds for graduating Perkins High School seniors in the form of the Smith Memorial Scholarship. Each year the goal is to award at least two scholarships to students who excel in extracurricular activities.
The 2013 scholarship recipients were Michael Decker, Samantha Jarrett and Christopher Johnson.
Smith was a popular cross country coach for the Pirates and a former member of the Perkins Board of Education, who died in an automobile accident in June of 2012.
Entry fee is $75 per person and includes golf, cart, hot dogs, beverages, steak dinner, rigatoni, sides and an opportunity to win team and hole prizes. “We had 36 teams a year ago and we would like to match that number this year” said Dave Kessler, tournament chairman. Hartley leads Buckeye State
Bellevue senior Isaac Hartley has the lead in his age group after the first round of the Buckeye State junior championships with an even par 71 at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk Tuesday. Hartley posted a round of 35-36 over the par 36-35—71 layout for a two-stroke advantage over his nearest challengers in the 36-hole medal play event which ends today with the final 18. Hartley had three birdies and three bogeys in putting together his best round ever at the Norwalk course.
“I did well on the par-five holes today” said Hartley, who is striving to become one of the players to move on to the next level of competition, this time in Pennsylvania.
The top finishers in each of the six age brackets — three boys and three girls — advance. Dylan DeWitt, Bellevue, and Bo Pettegrew, Huron, are also in the same class and each wound up at 79. Hartley was also the leading area golfer in the tournament last week at Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield when he placed 16th out of 94 players with scores of 78-79-75—232.
