Bay to Bay Road Trip
Road Trip Day 3: From Bay to Bay
Jul 2, 2014 at 10:29 PM
And on the third day, it rained.
Our day started in Towanda, Pennsylvania after breakfast. A storm rolled in and we decided on a second breakfast as the boys are hungry every 23.5 minutes.
When we saw our window open between storm clouds, we left. We made it as far as three blocks before we found the Daily Review, Towanda’s local newspaper. I make it a habit to stop at newspapers and ice cream stands during our road trips. The former for me and the latter for the boys…and me. The Daily Review’s managing editor Tiffany Towner gave us a tour of the newsroom as she was the only one there. The storm had taken out some trees and power lines, some of which were on U.S. 6. Lucky for us they were west of town and not east.
As we left Towanda we made it as far as Wyalusing, about 15 miles, before we found our first ice cream stand. Will noticed a smiley face at the Smile A While ice cream parlor. The boys have been giving out smile stickers along the journey to continue the tradition of friend and former Shawnee Elementary principal Tanny Vonthron. After giving stickers to the young employees at Smile A While the girls there asked why the boys had them. A conversation with the owner resulted in a surprise donation to the memorial scholarship fund in Tanny’s honor. We also left a box of stickers with them to give out to the customers that day.
Our trip continued on the Grand Army of the Republic Highway past several overlooks of the mountainous region and past several more ice cream stands. We didn’t stop for more ice cream, but did take in the views.
Then the rain came, and the thunder and the lightning. We kept at a slow, but steady pace and made our way through towns called Tunkhannock, Carbondale, Waymart and Honesdale. The route took us around Scranton so there was no trip to the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company, fictionally based there in The Office.
We stopped in Hawley, “Where Main Street Matters” according to their slogan. We wandered into the Penny Lane Candies store and were lucky to leave spending under $20.
On the other side of the road as we headed east was the 6 West Bar & Grill. I poked my head in to say hello and was given a shirt that may come in handy next year should this series continue.
We only strayed from U.S. 6 East once when we were in Milford, PA close to the New York State line. Luckily we found our way back within a mile of being “lost.”
The night ended with more rain as we settled into the Overlook Lodge at Bear Mountain. So far, so good, as we haven’t seen any twin girls wandering the halls. The staff here has been overly helpful and we look forward to seeing more and sharing more of Bear Mountain with you tomorrow.
