Sandusky Fire Department
Fire marshal's exit an opportunity

Sandusky fire marshal Rudy Ruiz is leaving the Sandusky fire department after 22 years. Sandusky’s loss is Bedford Township’s gain. Ruiz will serve as chief to the southern Michigan township’s fire department.
The last few decades have been tumultuous for SFD with multiple chiefs, the closing of stations and the opening of other headquarters, a changing population and ever-shrinking budget.
Through it all, Ruiz has performed his duties as a firefighter, a paramedic and the fire marshal with the utmost professionalism and concern for the residents of this city. We wish him all the best in his career move.
That being said, we wonder if it really necessary to replace Ruiz. With the recent announcement of cuts in personnel, the salary marked for a marshal might be better spent on a firefighter.
This is not to diminish the role of the marshal, but if tough choices have to be made, wouldn’t it make more sense to beef up battalions with another firefighter?
