The best way to spread Christmas cheer

Here, there everywhere I go, I seem to run into PT Barnum.

Maybe you have, too.

He’s a friendly guy, most distinguishable during the month of December by a mission that’s hard to miss.

When he’s not at home, this Sanduskian totes around a DVD player that plays only one disc until Christmas Day — the movie “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell.

Barnum’s goal is to watch the 2003 film 100 times before Christmas Day, believing it’s an unappreciated piece of Americana that falls by the wayside each holiday season to other classics, such as “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

He keeps a tally on his phone to make sure he doesn’t lose track of how many times he has viewed the movie. “Elf” is actually one of two Christmas movies I own, but I have no desire to watch it more than twice a season.

So, the ever curious reporter in me was inclined to ask Barnum: Why? “Because the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear,” he said, grinning from ear to ear.
