Pere Ubu rock band still exists

For a moment there, I thought I had one of the biggest scoops in rock music, at least in the English-speaking world. Pere Ubu had broken up!

The band's leader, David Thomas, sent out a Tweet from @ubuprojex on July 15: "I quit music. Goodbye."

The Tweet on the apparent demise of the famed art-punk band from Cleveland attracted little attention in the Western Hemisphere, although a Dutch music site ran a brief article on the big news about the demise of "De experimentele rockgroep uit Cleveland, Ohio."

Robert Wheeler, the band's keyboard player (and a rural Milan resident) told me Monday that the statement was a fit of frustration but that the band is continuing to work and make plans.

The band is trying to tour in the U.S., but two British members have been denied admission, allegedly on the grounds that the band isn't famous enough.

"It was a moment of frustration," Wheeler said.

Wheeler said he has direct evidence that Thomas is continuing to work with the band.

"He called me twice today, giving me tasks to do," Wheeler said.
