Positive programs build community

There is plenty of negative news to report in our newspaper on a daily basis. However, there are also many positive things going on in the community that not only deserve the reporting we provide, but deserve our praise as well.

Some of the recent positive stories in our newspaper that grabbed our attention include:

 * Goodwill Industries of Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky counties partnering with Sandusky city officials to help mow overgrown lawns at nuisance properties. This partnership not only provides employment for at least six people working for Goodwill Industries, it helps the image of the entire city by cleaning up the properties and inspiring neighbors to do the same.

We call this common-sense governing and something we would like to see more of.

To get a vacant lawn mowed, call the city’s code enforcement department at 419-627-5913.

* The annual Playground Program presented by the city of Sandusky’s recreation department has kicked off for the summer season, offering children ages 6-12 recreation opportunities in addition to a healthy lunch and snacks.

The free program is offered 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily at Schaeffer, Huron, Farwell and Foxborough parks and is made possible through funds provided by the Erie, Huron and Richland counties Children’s Advocacy Centers and the Wightman-Wieber Foundation.

More than 4,000 children took part last year, making this one of the most successful city programs ever.

For information on the program, call the recreation department at 419-627-5886.

 * The revival of the Citizens Police Academy this September will educate residents on the inner workings of the police world. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the Sandusky, Perkins and Huron police departments are offering the 10-week program, which will go a long way toward teaching participants how law enforcement works. To sign up for the free program, call 419-625-7951, ext. 6271, or email swestcott@eriecounty.oh.gov  .
