There's an app for that!

I love mobile technologies. I love being able to use my smartphone to call my mom, text a friend, check in on Facebook and Google search for an answer when I’m stumped. I also use my smartphone as an entertainment hub; I listen to music, podcasts, and an occasional audiobook, watch YouTube videos and read eBooks and magazines. Fortunately, you too can have access to these services for FREE! Let’s have our cake and eat it too.

For the first time in history, smartphone sales have surpassed feature phone sales, and many customers are turning to tablets rather than traditional PCs. The library started to recognize this technology shift last year. Because of the generosity from the Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation, the Sandusky Library has been able to provide its card holders with free access to popular materials such as eBooks, music, magazines, and eAudiobooks.

To get us started, let’s talk about downloadable eBooks and audiobooks. Through CLEVNET Library Cooperation the library hosts a robust digital media collection. We have awesome titles like: Inferno by Dan Brown, Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris and American Sniper by Chris Kyle, just to name a few. To download titles to your mobile device, simply install the OverDrive Media Console app through your device’s app store.

Would you rather read digital magazines? No problem – there’s an app for that too. By downloading the Zinio app and accessing the library’s digital magazine collection via our website you can download and enjoy full editions of magazines such as Us Weekly, Country Living, Family Circle, Car & Driver, Rolling Stone, and many more. Did I mention that these magazines never expire? This means that you can access back issues of magazines once you have downloaded them.

If music is more your style, there’s an app for that. After installing the Freegal app and punching in your library card number you can begin downloading music from P!nk, Sara Bareilles, Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake and other popular musicians. You can download three MP3 music tracks per week; that’s 12 tracks per month, totaling 144 tracks per year!

I saved the best app for last. Have you ever wanted to search the library’s catalog straight from your mobile device? Perhaps you wanted to renew an item or even place one on hold. Well, now you can! Using the CLEVNET app you can access the entire CLEVNET catalog, place items on hold, review materials, view your account details, learn the Library’s hours and location and even store your library card number.

The apps mentioned in this blog post are free and available in the Apple App Store and Google Play. So if you’re using an Apple device - iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad/iPad Mini you will want to head over to the Apple App Store to download the apps. For my Android friends, if you’re using a DROID, HTC One, Galaxy 3 or 4 smartphone, and/or a Nexus or a Galaxy tablet you will want to visit the Google Play store. Once you’ve access the appropriate app store you will want to search for these four apps: OverDrive Media Console, Zinio, Freegal, and CLEVNET.

What are you waiting for? Turn on your mobile device and start downloading! If you have any questions, we’re here to help. Call, email, stop by or even Facebook us.
