I gave blood and all I got was this lousy juice

Jason Werling • Dec 10, 2012 at 4:08 PM

My kids like to give blood. Let me rephrase that, my kids like me to give blood.

This past summer we went to East Harbor State Park in Ottawa County to play disc golf and check out the beach. As we drove into the park, we were welcomed by an American Red Cross  Bloodmobile.

I thought that was a pretty random place for a bloodmobile and the boys thought "What is a bloodmobile?" I told them people give blood to help other people who may need it because they may be having a surgery or were in an accident or someone may need blood because their body can't produce blood as well as someone else.

There were a few other questions and the next thing I knew I was giving blood at East Harbor State Park.

Somehow in the process I ended up with a pricked finger and a needle in my arm and the boys had stuffed animals, cookies and juice. (In my opinion, the pricked finger for the iron test is worse than the needle in the arm.)

Will and Payton, my boys, were amazed at how fast my body could output a pint. If they only knew how fast I could "input" a pint in college. After donating, I was given the cookies and juice, but no stuffed animal. I hope the boys were given a lesson in giving that day and it sticks with them longer than the toy.

The photos above are from last Thursday's blood drive at Sandusky High School. The drive yielded 152 pints of blood. Each pint of blood could help save three lives, the Sandusky High School helped save 456 lives. Jeff Opelt has  been the teacher advisor for the blood drives for over 25 years. Each year for the past 10 years the Sandusky High School blood drives have collected more pints of blood than any other High School in a three state area.  The schools average yearly blood  collections are between 800-900 pints per year.  Over the past 25+ years the school has saved more lives than the population of Erie County.

Two Seniors oversee the blood drive every year.  This year Taylor Vargo and Jake Riedy are the Senior coordinators.  Every year two sophomores, two juniors and two seniors organize the drive so by the time the sophomores are seniors they have the knowledge and skills to run that years blood drive. This information was provided by Mary Ann Betton, Donor Recruitment Representative for the American Red Cross.
