BLOG: Connie Schultz working on a novel

Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper columnist Connie Schultz is taking on a new writing challenge. She's writing a novel.

That's probably a logical step, as her best columns always have been focused on people and their everyday lives. She's gotten a good early review — her husband likes it so far.

Schultz, 55, has tried to keep quiet about her upcoming book, but outed herself Friday in her Twitter account, writing, "A writer's version of waiting for poll results: Hand husband first chapters of novel, then pace around the house as he reads."

The "husband" mentioned in the Tweet is U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. Although he's probably too busy to join any book clubs -- he's running for re-election --- he's a serious reader. Schultz's home page on Twitter is decorated with photographs of bookshelves and the couple's dog, Franklin.

Schultz won't say much about the book, but here's the official word: "All I'm saying is that it's about a working-class family. Oh, and SB -- my toughest literary critic -- loves it so far."

Schultz and Brown both contributed to my blog posting last year on "favorite books of 2011."
