Excerpt: Be outraged

Matt Westerhold • May 1, 2012 at 3:44 AM

Excerpt from "Between the Lines" opinion page column, Sunday, April 29, 2012:

As your city crumbles in decay, right in front of your eyes, declare “I love Sandusky,” and propose a downtown parking fee plan targeting tourists to fund the very bureaucracy that continues to squander tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars every day, day in and day out. And never offer any criticism of the system.

Hire an interim police chief to replace the reformminded female chief you ran out of town. Make sure the new guy is strong on lip service and weak on action, wanting to please everyone and unable to please anyone. That should work.

Suspend police officers who violate basic standards but keep paying them — for months — and hire a Columbus labor attorney, an officer of the court, who is willing to redact public records of information that might prove most embarrassing to the police department, regardless of what the Ohio Revised Code requires.

High-fives, all around.

These are stories about administrative incompetence — widespread and pervasive — and the community’s acceptance of that.
