BLOG: Rich Iott mulls comeback race

Remember Rich Iott? He was the Republican candidate for the U.S. House's 9th District (which includes Erie and Ottawa counties), running against the Democratic incumbent, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Sandusky.

Iott was the first serious Republican candidate to challenge Kaptur in years, but his efforts foundered after The Atlantic published articles about his hobby of participating in historical reenactments as a member of the 5th SS Waffen Panzer Division Wiking, a Nazi combat unit in World War II. Criticism rained on Iott, despite his explanation that he has also been a Civil War reenactor (for both sides), a World War I American soldier and World War II American soldier. The Republican Party essentially tossed him under the bus.

Iott has now written a response to a recent article on the perils of historical reenacting, and says he might consider running again next year, depending on how redistricting comes out. (Ohio will lose two U.S. House seats, so district lines must be redrawn in a major way.)

"Naturally, I would not try to challenge a good, incumbent Republican," Iott says.
