If you're a Romeo who lives in Ohio and you venture west across the Michigan border, you'd best be careful. Women in Michigan are not to be trifled with.
Here's the relevant criminal statute from the Michigan penal code:
"Any man who shall seduce and debauch any unmarried woman shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than 5 years or by fine of not more than 2,500 dollars .... "
UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh, who pointed to the statute in a recent post on his Volokh Conspiracy group blog, says there have been 30 convictions under the statute from 2002 to 2008. Most, if not all, are plea-bargains reached when a defendant originally had been charged with a more serious crime, he suggests.
