There's nothing wrong with being in a Patriot group

The indictments of nine members of the Hutaree Christian militia group, who allegedly plotted to kill police officers, has focused attention on a large class of other people who have not committed any crimes and who don't deserve to be lumped in with an alleged terrorist group.

In particular, I object to lumping in so-called "Patriot" groups, who by and large are simply conservative groups who express commonplace criticisms of big government and high taxes.

Here is an article from Reason magazine about how media-generated panic over right-wing violence is being used to attack peaceful dissent. And here's an article by left-winger Alexander Cockburn about how the Southern Poverty Law Center uses fear of right-wing groups as a fund-raising device.

Cockburn writes, "What is the arch-salesman of hate-mongering, Mr. Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center doing now? He's saying that the election of a black president proves his point. Hate is on the rise! Send money!"
