Rock on, Ohio and Oklahoma

My home state, Oklahoma, has just adopted an official state rock song. The unexpected result is that “Do You Realize” by cult alternative rock band the Flaming Lips won the competition, beating out tunes from better-known artists such as Leon Russell and J.J. Cale.

In case you didn’t know, Ohio has an official rock song, too: “Hang on Sloopy,” performed by the McCoys and written by Rick Derringer of Fort Recovery, Ohio, who later scored a hit with his song, “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,” and played with Alice Cooper, Cyndi Lauper and many others.

Trivia bit: “Hang on Sloopy” was the No. 1 song in America until “Yesterday” by The Beatles replaced it at the top of the charts.
