Obama hopes and fears

With the election of Barack Obama as our nation’s next president, attention turns to what will happen when he takes office, and the hopes and fears that his campaign raises.

My biggest hope is that electing a former college lecturer on constitutional law will mean that Constitutional rights will be respected again and that the government will restore the balance between anti-terrorism efforts and civil liberties. I also hope the new administration will emphasize diplomacy rather than force when dealing with other countries.

My biggest fear is that Obama (as this other blogger fears) really might believe his protectionist trade rhetoric, and will launch a trade war in the middle of a recession. I’m guessing and hoping he’s too pragmatic to do that, but I’m worried about it. I’m also uneasy about his commitment to NASA’s Constellation program and hope his conversion to supporting it is sincere. It would mean so much to NASA Plum Brook Station and to our region for the program to go forward.

What are your biggest hopes and fears?
