Don’t believe the cell phone hoax

Tom Jackson • Mar 23, 2010 at 6:27 PM

This afternoon, someone I know forwarded me an e-mail message, written with the usual breathless tone one always reads in a bogus e-mail.

“REMEMBER: Cell Phone Numbers Go Public next month.REMINDER....  all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls.”

It said to call the “Do Not Call” list phone number, and had the usual admonishment to forward the message to everyone you know around the globe. Judging from the e-mail addresses, it was sent to many people in Erie County.

It’s a hoax.

Whenever you get an e-mail warning you to take action to avert a dire threat and asking you to send the message to everyone you know, always check here first before sending the message on.

My favorite Internet hoax is the “Internet spring cleaning” day. See if you can figure out why this vital maintenance function begins at midnight, March 31, and continues until April 2.
