Mathew Old, the chairman of the Erie County Republican Party, is a young person, and young folks like to hang out at social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook.
Old has created a brand-new MySpace page. He isn't looking for love or friendship; he wants volunteers to help the Erie County Republican Party in this year's elections. (But if you are a single conservative looking to meet people, there are probably worse methods than volunteering for a Republican campaign.)
"We're trying to reach out to a new generation of voters," Old said. "We can create an online dialogue and hopefully translate that to volunteers."
Old's comrades in the national Republican Party have created a parody Facebook site for Barack Obama, complete with friend updates from the likes of ex-Weatherman William Ayers.
Democrats, though, may have the last laugh in cyberspace. The New York Times says Obama has 1.2 million friends on Facebook, compared to just 200,000 for John McCain.
