Come see the animals for Christmas

The dogs and the cats are being prepped to be nice instead of naughty when the Erie County Humane Society hosts its annual Christmas Open House from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the shelter, 1911 Superior St.

“We give a behind the scenes tour,” said Amy Porter, executive director of the humane society. “People get to go into all the rooms of the shelter.”

There will be a silent auction for items to please both pets and their owners, there will be raffles and door prizes, and the walls will have lots of Christmas decorations, including the stockings the shelter has been making for local dogs and cats.

Animal adoptions will be made, too, so if your child wants a pet for Christmas, “come pick it out on Thursday,” Porter said.

I asked if visitors would be required to listen to the notorious Christmas record of dogs barking out “Jingle Bells.” Porter laughed and said not to worry.

“We will have tasteful Christmas music playing throughout the shelter,” she said.
