2009: It could be worse

This year has not been as good as others, so far, and it all starts with appliances. The toaster, the CD player, the light fixture over the dining room table and the one in the closet, all have malfunctioned.

The light fixtures have been the most irritating, blinking lights and burned out light bulbs have been a hallmark of 2009. I have to un-screw the globe, replace the light bulb, screw the globe back on. The new light bulb might last a week or two, it seems, before I have to do it all over again. I’ve given up on the fixture over the dining room table and don’t even bother flipping the switch to the “on” position anymore. The candles are nice, however.

But the dryer going on the blink is the big one. The heating element is shot, which likely means I’ll have to replace the dryer. But I’m in the process of trying to buy a house in Sandusky and figuring when I do finally settle that my new home likely will come with a dryer. So I’m holding off that appliance purchase to see how it all shakes out. The electric bills have probably shot up to the point where it would be cheaper to just break down and spend the money on a new dryer, however, but I am more stubborn than I am sensible.

Laundry is a regular routine in every household and I like routines. But now, whenever I dry clothes it takes hours, which has completely destroyed my schedule and my routine. The dishwasher doesn't seem to be working as well as it use to either.

I also had to buy new tires for my Chevrolet, and have other work done that cost almost $900. Can’t really whine too much about that, however, because the tires had 80,000 miles on them and the Chevrolet has been as reliable as any car I have ever owned. It's a great car.

2009 … it could be worse. I’m still above ground.
