A variety of defensive sets and clutch free throw shooting added up to a 48-40 win for the Margaretta boys basketball team against host St. Joseph Central Catholic Wednesday in Fremont.

Margaretta improved to 10-7 overall with the non-conference win while St. Joseph fell to 9-9.

Leading 34-32 entering the fourth quarter, the Polar Bears got six of their 14 points in the final eight minutes at the free throw line.

"The free throw line was big in the fourth quarter, and we were able to force some steals that led to easy buckets off our pressure," Margaretta coach Troy Roth said.

Roth was especially pleased to limit the Crimson Streaks to 40 points, but most notably the ability to contain Brant Reardon, an all-Northwest district selection a year ago.

Reardon scored 17 of his team's 40 points, but was held to six points in the second half.

"Defensively we played really well, we mixed up our fronts quite a bit," Roth said. "Craig (Galindo) and Devin (Jones) did a real nice job on Reardon in the second half."

Jones led Margaretta with 17 points while Galindo added 11 and Austin Moore scored eight.

After winning the rescheduled game, the Bears have just a day of preparation to get ready for visiting Perkins (15-2) on Friday night.

"We're happy to get to 10 wins, but we have got a big challenge in front of us Friday," Roth said. "Hopefully we didn't wear ourselves out tonight, but at this point of the year kids would rather be practicing than playing games anyway.

"We'lll give Perkins our best shot, but Perkins isn't 15-2 for no reason."

SJCC is at Carey (12-5) on Tuesday.
