MANSFIELD — The Western Reserve girls’ basketball team knocked off a strong Mansfield St. Peter team Tuesday, 69-63, giving the Lady Riders momentum heading into their season finale against Plymouth with the FC title on the line.
Leading 49-43 to start the fourth quarter, the Riders staved off a late rally by the Lady Spartans.
With less than two minutes to play in the game, St. Peter pulled to within one point, but the Riders were able to get a key stop and a rebound — and made their free throws down the stretch — for the win over St. Peter (16-2), that has been in and out of the Division IV state rankings this season.
And the Lady Riders were able to hold off the Lady Spartans late without veteran post player Kelsey Wyant, who fouled out in the middle of the fourth.
“It's like a shot in the arm,” Riders coach Brenda Friend said. “It's a quality win against a quality opponent on the road, in their gym. We were able to weather the storms during the game.”
Six players scored eight or more points for the Riders, with four scoring in double figures. Natalie Robson scored 18 points to lead Western, followed by Wyant with 15.
At least five players scored in three of four quarters, Friend said, as Western shot 29 of 55 from the field. For a team that averages around 55 points per game it was a perfect time to score 69. They needed every point, she said.
The Lady Riders dished out 19 assists as a team, led by Jackson with eight.
Jackson also recorded a team-high five steals.
Wyant led Western Reserve on the boards with eight rebounds, followed by Clouse and Robson with six each.
Western Reserve (17-2) overall will travel Thursday to Plymouth (14-5, 12-1 FC) with the FC on the line.
Plymouth won the first meeting in Collins, 62-41.
