WILLARD — Senior Alysun Daniel scored 20 points, including the 1000th of her career, as the Lady Flashes knocked off Galion 62-53 Friday in a Northern Ohio League girls’ contest.
Daniel now has 1,002 points, and becomes the eighth player in the history of Willard girls’ basketball to eclipse the 1,000 point barrier.
The teams battled to a 12-12 first quarter standoff, but the Lady Flashes used a 16-6 scoring advantage in the second period to go up 28-18 at the half.
The third quarter was a near replay of the first, with a 19-19 deadlock to keep Willard in the lead at 47-37 heading into the final frame.
The Lady Tigers managed a 16-15 edge to close things out.
“It was just a great night for Alysun and the Lady Flashes’ family,” Willard coach Jon Dawson said. “The kids were a little nervous, I think, knowing that she (Alysun) was so close. They were pressing for her to get it tonight.”
Daniel said, “All I was concerned about was that we would get the win — that was the most important thing. I couldn’t have done this without a lot of great teammates who were willing to get me the ball.”
In addition to Daniel, Alyssa Opatken tallied 16 points and Ally Graham added 13.
Vanessa Chatman scored 23 points to lead Galion.
The Lady Tigers won the jayvee game 42-36.
Willard (10-6, 7-4) entertains Clyde Tuesday night in non-league play.
“We plan to use this as a momentum builder for the rest of the season,” Dawson said.
