The St. Mary Central Catholic girls basketball team just might be turning the corner at the right time.

After a 1-10 start to the season, the Panthers won for the fourth time in five games Thursday night, beating Port Clinton 52-47 in a Sandusky Bay Conference game.

The win improved the Panthers to 5-11 overall and 3-8 in the SBC while Port Clintotn fell to 5-9, 3-8.

"We talked about it after game, that we are getting in a stretch here where we can compete with teams," SMCC coach Dave Lozier said. "We are getting better and are starting to peak at the right time.

"There are some things the kids need to work on still, but there has been more good than there was earlier in the season. Things are pretty positive right now."

Junior Lindsay Kaatz continued her hot streak with 27 points to lead the Panthers. Kaatz has 346 points for the season, good for a 21.6 scoring average. The school record for highest average in a single season is 22.4 points per game.

"Regardless of double or triple teams, she seems to find a way to make plays," Lozier said. "She's really gotten better spreading ball around and seeing the open person. She struggled with that earlier in season, but she is getting more people involved.

"I think that is from her being able to pass out of double teams, so it's a credit to her and the rest of the girls. And Brady was outstanding at the point, and Maddie probably had her best game of season with 10 points."

Hope Thorbahn led Port Clinton with 11 points while Meigan Day scored 10.

Olivia Curtis added 12 rebounds for the Panthers, who host Fremont St. Joseph at home on Tuesday.

"We just need to keep playing well," Lozier said. "I like where we're heading."

Port Clinton is off until a trip to Perkins on Feb. 5.
