Polar Bears freeze Willard in home win

Margaretta rebounded from a loss to Bellevue come-from-behind win over Willard Thursday in a non-conference game at Margaretta High School.

The Polar Bears trailed 28-20 at the break, but outscored the Crimson Flashes 36-12 after the half for the victory. Margaretta coach Tim Tucker called Margaretta's second-half effort "the best half we've had all year."

"I thought coming in tonight we were capable of playing with Willard. We needed a win against a good team," he said. "We've beaten teams that we should beat, but this was good for us tonight."

The Bears (8-7) were only 10 of 36 from the floor in the first half. All 10 baskets came from the key, close to the basket.

In the second half, Tucker said, Margaretta's offensive decision-making improved, and shots started falling. The Bears burst out of the gate on a 10-1 run, taking a 30-29 lead and built through the rest of the game.

"We didn't (take as many), but we had better shots, shots inside of 15 feet," Tucker said. "We started pushing the ball more.

"The defensive intensity changed. The halftime discussion about playing harder helped. When you start playing defense, offense gets a lot easier -- You start relaxing and getting more baskets.

The Bears pounded the Crimson Flashes (10-4) on the boards, 45-19. Margaretta pulled down almost as many offensive rebounds, 18, as the Flashes had for the game.

Shannon Coy and Sarah Weyer led the Bears with 12 (3 offensive) and 11 boards (5 offensive), respectively.

"I think that comment in the paper -- that Bellevue really went to the boards on us -- really woke us up," Tucker said.

Margaretta shot just 3 of 11 at the charity stripe, while Willard was worse at 3 of 14. The Bears misfired on their first eight attempts.

Kelsey Kromer and Coy reached double figures for the Bears with 11 and 10 points, respectively, followed by Chey Morris with eight.

Alysun Daniel scored 10 points and Ally Graham nine for Willard.

This weekend, around 40 people from the Margaretta basketball program -- varsity and junior varsity players, parents and others -- will travel to Cincinnati to see the No. 2-ranked University of Connecticut Huskies (18-1) play the UC Bearcats (8-11).
