COLLINS — Western Reserve overcame 29 turnovers and dominated Edison defensively for a 47-26 victory in non-league girls’ basketball action Tuesday night.

The Lady Riders improve to 10-1 overall. The Lady Chargers fall to 5-8.

Edison came out aggressively but didn’t hold the lead for long. They led 6-2 four minutes into the game, but the Lady Riders took over from there.

An 8-0 run to end the first and an 8-2 run to start the second by Western Reserve gave Western the cushion it needed.

The Lady Riders led 21-10 at half and 35-14 after three. Both teams posted 12 in the final quarter.

Defensively as a team, Western held Edison to 11-of-64 shooting from the floor and a 42-17 edge in rebounding.

“I was very impressed with our team defense tonight,” Lady Riders coach Brenda Friend said. “We’ve been giving up a lot of penetration in the lane off the dribble and not been rebounding very well at all at each end.”

“We’ve been struggling lately with our intensity and our confidence,” she added. “But as a team, collectively, everybody made some kind of an improvement tonight in the game. I’m pretty happy about that, because we have a big game [Thursday].”

Theresa Jackson led Western Reserve with 13 points.

Kelsey Wyant added 10 points, while Natalie Robson notched eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Riders went 19-of-39 from the floor and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line.

Edison shot 3-of-11 and committed 17 turnovers.

Danielle Wilhelm and Susan Knight led Edison with five points each.

“Defensively, overall the girls played hard. We got turnovers but we couldn’t convert baskets off turnovers,” Edison coach Jim Colwell said.  “We didn’t attack the basket. We settled for jump shots,. We didn’t rebound. They physically manhandled us on the boards.”

Western Reserve, with one FC loss, battles two-loss St. Paul at home Thursday. The winner remains one game back of unbeaten Plymouth in the FC.

Edison hosts Oak Harbor in Sandusky Bay Conference action Saturday.
