GREENWICH — Behind a strong start and balanced scoring, the South Central Lady Trojans cruised past the Monroeville Lady Eagles 76-48 Wednesday in Firelands Conference girls' basketball action at South Central High School.

With the win, South Central improved to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the FC, while the Lady Eagles fell to 0-7 and 0-4.

The Lady Trojans put the game away early, leading 24-9 after one quarter and 39-20 at the half.

“It’s awesome,” South Central coach Becky Hintz said about the win.

South Central was paced by junior Tayler Tackett, who scored 22 points and added 15 rebounds for a double-double.

Senior Shelby Wheeler chipped in 17 points, sophomore Brenna Legg and freshman Alli Hintz each netted nine and junior Alana Chandler scored seven.

Hintz was very pleased with the balanced attack.

“We've been working on that, trying to balance that out,” she said. “We talked that everyone is just as important and we need everyone to be scoring threats.

“The main thing is we want to keep working hard and building on this,” the coach added. “Before the game we said, go out there and have some fun. We have a long way to go, but we’ll keep working on it everyday.”

Hintz also complimented Wheeler’s play.

“She also made some nice passes,” the coach said. “I think she had six assists.”

Monroeville was led by junior Brooke Barnett, who scored 16 and grabbed eight boards.

Maddie Quillen netted nine points and Krista Gerber added eight for the Lady Eagles.

“Offensively, that is the most points we have scored all year,” Monroeville coach Brad Dunlap said. “I’m happy with that and we also had more shots and better looks.

“Defensively, we continue to improve,” the coach added. “We need to work on boxing out and not giving up second-chance points.”

South Central won the battle of the boards, 36-19.

The Lady Trojans shot 24-of-55 from the field, 26-of-32 at the line and had 20 turnovers.

Monroeville was 15-of-36 in action shots, 16-of-24 at the stripe and committed 32 miscues.

The Lady Eagles play again Tuesday at Huron, while South Central hosts New London Jan. 6.

Monroeville won the junior varsity game, 46-35.
