Norwalk started strong in Friday’s Northern Ohio League girls’ basketball game against Galion at NHS.

The Lady Truckers outscored the visitors 22-10 in the second quarter en route to a 67-48 decision.

After three straight losses, Norwalk broke into the win column. They also evened their league mark to 1-1.

“It’s validation of our hard work,’’ Norwalk coach Marjoe Cooper said. “When we get off to a good start, we become a new animal.”

A Hayley Souslin three-point play at the end of the opening period put the Lady Truckers up 21-19.

Then, Norwalk started the second quarter with a 12-2 run to grab a 33-21 lead.

The Lady Truckers pushed that margin to 43-29 at halftime, 56-42 after three quarters and eventually the final margin.

Norwalk had seven players score, led by Oakley Shane with 19 points. She tossed in 13 second-half points.

Jocelyn Thomas contributed 16 points, including 10 in the second quarter. Hayley Souslin tossed in nine first-quarter points and Lindsey Ziemke chipped in with eight.

Norwalk shot 27-of-62 from the field and 12-of-16 from the free-throw line with 28 rebounds and 24 turnovers.

Shane pulled down six boards and Thomas checked in with five.

The Lady Tigers went 21-of-49 and 5-of-12 from the charity stripe with 21 boards and 37 turnovers.

Galion committed 22 of those turnovers in the first half.

“It was a total team effort,’’ Cooper said. “If we can figure how to play as a team, we can go eight to 10 deep. The pressure got to them.’’

Norwalk faced Western Reserve, Perkins and Bellevue to start the season, accounting for its three losses.

“I think last week we were in awe of our schedule,’’ Cooper said. “We grew up tonight.’’

The Lady Truckers made it a sweep on the night, winning the reserve game 50-22.

Kailee Flowers tallied 13 points, Sydnie Fetherolf netted 10 and Abby Moffit contributed nine to pace Norwalk (3-1, 1-1).

The Lady Trucker defense limited Galion to just one point in the third quarter, while scoring 11.

Norwalk takes to the road Tuesday to play Shelby in NOL action.
