PLYMOUTH — History was made Thursday night at Plymouth High School.
Big Red senior Bre McVey scored her 1,000th point midway through the third quarter at the free-throw line and Plymouth cruised to an 80-59 win over South Central in Firelands Conference action.
McVey finished the night with 25 points and the Big Red improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the FC.
“It was really exciting,” McVey said.
After McVey scored No. 1,000, the game was stopped and she was presented the game ball and given a standing ovation by the crowd.
“I was freaking out, kind of,” she said.
McVey agreed the Big Red gave a good effort Thursday.
“We finally worked hard,” she said. “We need to keep working hard.”
McVey said she never would have imagined freshman year she would end up with 1,000 points as a senior.
“I barely played varsity as a freshman,” she said.
McVey and the Big Red were glad to put the Dec. 2 loss against Buckeye Central behind them.
“This is a lot different, a lot better,” she said.
Plymouth showed balance Thursday as senior Nicole Lyons scored 13 points and added nine rebounds and classmate Haley Goth added 12 points and 10 boards.
Big Red senior Sarah Shirey netted 19 points, while senior Whitney Jacobs added seven.
McVey’s accomplishment slightly overshadowed a stellar performance from South Central junior Tayler Tackett, who knocked down 41 points.
Plymouth coach Scott Speicher was happy to win and very glad for McVey.
“That’s Bre’s game,” he said about her 25 points.
“That’s a great accomplishment for her,” he added about the 1,000-point plateau.
“But Bre will be the first to tell you it’s all about the team,” the coach added. “Tonight, our effort was much better.”
Speicher was impressed with Tackett and the Lady Trojans.
“Tayler is a kid who works hard,” he said. “Becky (Hintz, South Central coach) has that group going in the right direction.”
South Central dropped to 2-2 and 0-1.
“Last year we finished 5-17, but we finished strong,” Hintz said. “We’ve been building on that because we knew we didn’t lose anybody.
“The girls worked hard in the off-season and we are starting to play together as a team and that is one of our main goals,” the coach added. “We just want to keep improving everyday. We had a big win over at St. Mary’s. This team is learning how to win.”
Plymouth led 21-12 after one quarter and 44-34 at the half.
The Big Red out-scored the Lady Trojans 19-14 in the third and 17-11 in the fourth to seal the win.
Shelby Wheeler added six points and Alli Hintz scored five for South Central.
Plymouth won the jayvee game, 58-44.
