The St. Paul Lady Flyers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 56-53 win over Tiffin Calvert at the convocation center.
The Lady Flyers led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before hanging on for the win. St. Paul trailed 10-7 after one quarter, but out-scored the Senecas 20-8 in the second to take a 27-18 halftime lead.
Each team tallied 17 points in the third, while Calvert held an 18-12 scoring edge in the fourth.
The Lady Flyers were led in scoring by senior Taylor Brown, who scored 15 points on five triples. Hillary Fritz added 11 points and Audrey Badovick netted 10 for the home team.
Allison Spence knocked down nine points for the Lady Flyers.
Kelsey Sikora led Calvert with 16 points.
“The game started slow, with neither team executing very well,” St. Paul coach Jeremy Bliss said.
“In the second quarter, we started running our stuff better,” he added. “The big thing for us is Taylor Brown made five threes in the first half which helped us open things up.
“Jess Draime, Hillary Fritz and Kirsten Bundschuh all did a nice job in the post,” Bliss added.
“In the second half, Calvert switched from zone to man and we made four straight layups and got the lead to 19 points with 2 1/2 to go in the third,” Bliss said. “But then we relaxed and due to Tiffin’s great effort and hard work made it a tight game.”
St. Paul opens Firelands Conference play Thursday at New London.
“New London has a nice team and we’ve got to be able to handle the basketball,” Bliss said.
St. Paul won the jayvee game, 28-18.
