Depending on your passion or hobby, the Erie County MetroParks is hoping that they’ll get your attention with the Fall Color Woods & Wines Tour taking place Oct. 23 at Edison Woods in Berlin Heights.

“This is the second year we’ve done it, where we’re hoping to take advantage of the beauty of the fall leaf colors,” said Erie MetroParks Special Events & Scheduling Coordinator Sue Daniel. “You’ll have a guided nature walk through Edison Woods and then we’ll come back to the shelter and have some light snacks. Then we’ll all drive individually to Quarry Hill Winery to do some wine tasting.”

Due to the intimacy of the winery, Daniels said this event is limited to 20 participants, who will get to see Quarry Hill Winery’s brand-new wine building.

“It’s on a hillside, which is one of the high points of Erie County,” Daniels said. “It overlooks the vineyards, you can see Edison Woods. The Bill Gammie Family [Quarry Hill Winery owners] property abuts Edison Woods and they’re good neighbors of the MetroParks. So the idea is to get people out in nature and then partnering with another local business just to showcase the beautiful things in Erie County.”

Edison Woods boasts over 1,300 acres, making it one of the largest grassland restoration projects in Northern Ohio. This includes roughly 550 acres of wetland habitats and 300 acres of restored native grasslands. As far as plant life is concerned, over 460 species of plants have been found, including wildflowers and ferns. Bird watching is quite popular at the park, which also boasts amphibians and reptiles.

Daniel said the 45-minute outdoor walk gives visitors a sense of what the park has to offer.

“People will see the beauty of the colors, the serenity,” Daniels said. “It’s usually really quiet and offers a lot of hiking trails. It’s the only park in the system where you can ride your horses. So that’s pretty neat. The Ohio Horseman’s Council of Erie County does a lot of upgrades for the horse trails.”

Just to be clear, horses will not be allowed for the Fall Color Woods & Wines Tour. But what about bringing along a wine pouch for the walk?

“No,” Daniels laughed, “no wine in the MetroParks.”
