Don’t worry if the thought of a winery staging an Oktoberfest event sounds, well, a little odd. After all, this annual autumn tradition normally involves steins of German brew and hearty German fare.
Paper Moon Vineyards Winemaker Adam Cawrse acknowledges the Vermilion destination may have gotten its vines twisted, but that’s part of the fun at the winery’s debut Oktoberfest event taking place Oct. 8 on the venue grounds.
“Once a month we do something called our Second Saturday Supper,” said Cawrse, a Huron native and 2000 Edison High School graduate. “We have different themes for each month. We did a clambake last month and pig roasts and different things like that in the past, so we thought with it being this time of the year we’d do an Oktoberfest. The fest part of it is mainly in the food. We’re bringing in a caterer to do bratwurst, and peppers and onions and smoked sausage and cabbage and noodles and streudel.”
And it’s wine, not beer, right?
“Right, I’m encouraging people to enjoy the food and have a bottle of riesling, a classic German-Austrian area wine,” Cawrse said.
Opened for nearly three years, Paper Moon Vineyards is known for its wine list, including cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, riesling and popular dry wine Harvest Blend, as well as normal menu options such as soup, salad, paninis, flat bread pizzas, ciabatta bread with oil, cheese plates and hummus.
While this sounds more like normal operating procedure for a winery, there’s another aspect of the Oktoberfest event that, well, ups the odd ante.
“I’ll be probably dressed in lederhosen and walking around playing my tuba at different points in the night,” Cawrse said. “Our winery is named after the song ‘It’s Only a Paper Moon,’ so I’m planning on playing that at the top of each hour and just trying to have a little fun.”
It turns out Cawre has been playing tuba since he was a kid. In fact, he even played with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra. As for wearing lederhosen, there’s apparently a first time for everything.
“I believe this will be my first time, so I’m shopping for some right now,” Cawrse said. “I just might go with the shorts and some tall socks. We’ll see what I can find.”
