Maybe the Allman Brothers were onto something with their popular 1972 album “Eat a Peach.”

Fans of the tasty fruit can find out for themselves at the upcoming Peach Festival, which takes place Aug. 20 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Danbury Township.

“This used to be peach country,” said Peach Festival Committee Member Shirley LaCumsky. “We have farmers who are still growing peaches, and they donate their peaches to the Peach Festival like they have done for years and years.”

Added St. Paul Lutheran Pastor Chris Young, “It’s something that people come from all over the state and some even plan their vacations around it. We have everything homemade, basically, especially the desserts, which are mostly peach related.”

In a Bubba Gump fashion, the Peach Festival boasts peach pies, peach cobblers, sliced peaches and more. There are also a variety of non-peach food options including sloppy joes, shredded chicken, homemade chicken noodle soup, potato salad and three bean salad.

For roughly 40 years, the Peach Festival has attracted fruit lovers from all over the region. LaCumsky said attendance is normally in the 500-person range.

“It’s a fun day with a lot of fellowship,” LaCumsky said. “It’s a Christian event but we invite everybody to come to it.”

Whereas some rib-eating events come with bibs, participants hitting the Peach Festival may best be served bringing something similar because this sounds like a sweet, tasty and juicy affair.

Said Young, “We enjoy peaches because they are juicy and sweet, and around here they’re extra delicious.”
