Top five things to do this weekend

Ashley Bethard • May 12, 2015 at 6:11 PM

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here at Funcoast, we've put together plenty of top picks to keep you entertained. Whether you're a fan of live music (jazz or surf, take your pick), movies or winning free stuff, we've got you covered.

1.)   Funcoast.com Sizzling Summer Cruise Event

Why you should go: Because we’ll be there — giving away free stuff. Come hang out with us at Cheers as we give away tickets to our Sizzling Summer Cruise in September, as well as Funcoast swag and some other cool prizes. We’ll be throwing plenty of parties leading up to the end-of-summer cruise, but you won’t want to miss any of them.

WHEN: 6-8 p.m. Aug. 11

WHERE: Cheers, 4314 Milan Road #505, Sandusky (located in Sandusky Mall)

COST: Free

INFO: Funcoast.com

2.)   Jazz @ Eight: Trumpeter Charles Saenz

Why you should go: It’s a new Friday night hot spot, and you can enjoy a jazz club atmosphere in the State Room for a great price. The Jazz @ Eight series, which features the soothing sounds of the Michael Shirtz Quartet and assorted featured guests, will offer a unique opportunity for jazz lovers. Even if you’re not sure about jazz, why not give it a shot and discover some new music? If you’re still not sold, the evening will include beverages and light hors d’oeuvres, making it a perfect date night.

WHEN: 8 p.m. Aug. 12

WHERE: Sandusky State Theatre, 107 Columbus Ave., Sandusky

COST: $12/ticket

INFO: 419-626-1950 or sanduskystate.com

3.)   4th Annual Outdoor Film Festival

Why you should go: Another great date night activity (especially when paired with a good island-cooked meal at the Village Pump), this event is completely free and open to the public. The movie will be shown at the Village Pavilion off of Addison Street. Movies will start at dusk and a concession stand will have drinks and snacks available for purchase. Don’t miss out on what’s becoming an area tradition!

WHEN: 8:30-11:30 p.m. Aug. 12-13

WHERE: Village Pavilion, Addison St., Kelleys Island

COST: Free

INFO: kelleysisland.com

4.)   Riptide

Why you should go: What’s summer without a little surfing music? Come hang out at the charming, tiki-inspired Erie Kai Tavern and listen to the sounds of Riptide, the area’s premier surf band. Fun fact: they were a top contender in the Funcoast.com Battle of the Bands in June. Don’t forget your board shorts!

WHEN: 9 p.m. Aug. 12

WHERE: Erie Kai Tavern and Firefly Beach Resort, 4903 Cleveland Road E., Huron

COST: Free

INFO: 419-433-4910

5.)   Elvis Film Fest

Why you should go: The King lives! At the Norwalk Theatre, anyway. In addition to three Elvis classics — “Blue Hawaii,” “G.I. Blues” and “King Creole” — there will be Elvis karaoke and an Elvis costume contest. So break out the blue suede shoes (or a white, bejeweled Vegas bodysuit, if you prefer) and head to the Norwalk Main Street Theatre for a rockin’ good time.

WHEN: 2-9 p.m. Aug. 13

WHERE: Norwalk Main Street Theatre, 57 E. Main St., Norwalk

COST: $3/movie or $8/all movies
